3 Routes: Become a VeterinarianEveryone's pathway to become a veterinarian is different. Common routes for OSU students:
- OSU-DVM Early Admission Program
OSU-DVM Early Admission Program at OSU's College of Veterinary Medicine offers early admission for highly qualified OSU freshmen.
Steps:
- OSU-Stillwater freshmen entering with superior academic performance ready to commit early to OSU's Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program.
- Applications typically open in August and are due in mid-September of your freshman year at OSU.
- Accepted applicants have a guaranteed seat in OSU-DVM program upon completion of their OSU bachelor's degree, provided they continue to meet ongoing academic and extracurricular requirements laid out by the Early Admission Program.
- OSU Bachelor's + Vet School
OSU bachelor's degree then attend OSU's College of Veterinary Medicine or other DVM/VMD program (of your choice).
Steps:
- Earn your 4 year bachelor’s degree (of your choice) from OSU and complete all of your prerequisite courses for an accredited Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (DMD) program.
- Apply to an accredited DVM/VMD program. If accepted, begin your DVM or VMD professional program.

OSU Bachelor's + Gap Year + Vet School
Taking additional time can be to your advantage as a veterinary applicant.
Steps:
- Earn a bachelor’s degree (of your choice) from OSU and complete all of your prerequisite courses* for an accredited DVM/VMD program.
- If you feel you need more holistic development (academic or non-academic) to be ready to professionally apply, consider taking a “gap/enhancement year.”
- Unsure of what to do during a "gap/enhancement year?" Visit/schedule an appointment with OSU Pre-Professional Health & Law Support Services to discuss options.
- When holistically ready, apply to an accredited DVM/VMD program. If accepted, begin your professional veterinary program.
