Pre-professional Support Services

OSU-COM's 3+1 Program offers OSU juniors the opportunity to be considered for early provisional acceptance to medical school at OSU-College of Osteopathic Medicine (OSU-COM).

• Eligible candidates must enrolled at OSU-Stillwater as a full-time student.
• Completed 500 hours of participation in a health-related setting at the time of application to program.
• Apply early during the summer/early fall semester of your junior year at OSU-Stillwater.
• If granted provisional acceptance, you are guaranteed a spot in medical school at OSU-COM program, pending completion of all program requirements.

 

Timeline: 

• Complete 3 years at OSU in an approved OSU-COM 3+1 Program major. 
• Instead of a senior undergraduate year at OSU, begin medical school at OSU-COM in year 4.  
• OSU bachelor's degree awarded after completing 1st year of medical school.   
• After 4th year of medical school, receive Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from OSU-COM.  

 

If accepted, you agree to: 

• Maintain 3.5 overall and science GPA's each semester and full-time status at OSU.
• Complete all additional 3+1 Program requirements.

• Save time and money! complete both degrees in 7 years, instead of 8. 
• If accepted, you are provisionally accepted into medical school at OSU-COM during your junior year! 
• OSU-COM scholarship opportunities available to students. 

• Study hard! Earn a high, eligible GPA's scores for program pre-qualifications.
• Take rigorous courses. Biology, chemistry, physics, math, and other general core courses (English, history, foreign language, etc.) for holistic preparation.
• 3+1 Program allows college-level coursework to be earned prior to freshman year through: 
  • AP credit or Concurrent enrollment* (up to 30 hours).
  • *ALL grades from college-level courses are counted towards GPA requirements for this program and your college GPA. Please take all courses seriously.
• Gain healthcare exposure & community experiences early!
  • Live in Oklahoma? Attend OSU-COM's Operation Orange, campus tours and class presentations outreach events.
  • Observe/shadow/interview a physician, serve as a hospital/clinic/hospice volunteer or join local high school HOSA/OSU osteopathic medicine/med club chapter(s).
  • Get healthcare training/certification(s) early.
    • Reach out to local health career/vocational career training center(s) for opportunities to prepare to work/volunteer in direct healthcare service roles (i.e, Medical Assistant, EMS/EMT, CNA, Phlebotomist, Pharmacy Technician, Medical Scribe, etc.)

• Read scholarly books each year about osteopathic medicine, profession/career field and healthcare industry/system. Review free OSU Pre-Professional Health & Law Support Services Literature Library.
  • • *Non-OSU students can't check out books until an OSU student.
    • High-school age students can review pre-med/health book recommendations to find at your local public library. 
• Document/journal weekly about all patient and healthcare experiences, extracurricular activities, volunteer work and employment.
